This will not be a main brief and is more of a supplementary brief, seen as how the dealine for the entry is in May, there is not rush here, and it is only 1 or 2 illustrations. But the point is, I want to make the things i submit really good because this zine is a great oppertunity to showcase my work.
The Brief
Submit an entry for zine: Designer Violence, this season's topic being - smut...? it is optional to submit more than one entry. The more entries submitted, the greater the chance of having work showcased.
Deliverables
1 or more illustrative entries
Considerations
Tone of voice?
Approach?
As I said before this is just a mini brief, but there are a few mini briefs that I want to complete during this term, such as the zine ben has set up and submitting t shirt designs for the two website found in my research last year.

Nebula Publication Brief
As i said in a previous brief, I want to use type and layout to produce a publication, my chosen topic being space and more specifically, nebulas. I dont think people know that much about Nebulae, and they should because they are a beautiful and very powerful force of nature. I think its also good to know about things that are bigger than us.
Brief Title - Nebulae Publication
Context
In recent times and with the allowances of new technology, astronomers are looking to the heavens and recording more information about space than ever before. One avenue of this information is focused on Nebulae, but, what is a Nebula?
The Brief
Design and produce a supplementary publication for a magazine (you decide which context fits best within this.) This publication needs to inform interested people about Nebulae, what they are, why they happen, what they are made of etc. You may interpret this visuallt however you like.
Considerations
What is your tone of voice?
Who is your audience?
What is the context?
What disciplines will you be using - for example, illustration, data visualisation...
Deilverables
1x Nebulae publication
A body of supporting work
A body of supporting research clearly showing the information that has been used and collected.

Bonsai care package Brief
In the next few posts I will be elaborating on the briefs I have chosen to work on and why. With these briefs I aim to pinpoint where my strengths lie and use them to their full potential. So here is the first, I am doing the brief list in no particular order of preferance or anything else. Before I talk about the briefs I want to talk about the skills I want to use and what I want to persue throughout third year.
Refining my digital illustration and print skills into more realised products
Using type and layout
collating information and visualising it into design
Creating images using concepts which arent my own
Promoting myself and others using design

Brief Title - Bonsai Care Pack
Context
The art of Bonsai is an ancient horticultural Art form. Bonsai tree literally translates into tree in a pot, but in order to successfully grow a bonsai tree into a valuable and beautiful miniature tree is much more challenging than this alone. There is a complex and specific way to do this, you need to design an all in one care guide that informs people interested in growing/ have begun growing a bonsai tree, and provide for them the means to do so.
Brief
Design an informative pack or guide specifically the horticultural art of bonsai in response to information gathered about Bonsai Care.
This project should be completed with a body of research and supporting work which shows your line of inquiry into the subject.
Considerations Deliverables
What tools and equipment is needed 1 Bonsai Care pack/ care kit and a body
to care for a Bonsai tree? and a body of supporting research and
work.
What format could the guide take?
e.g. Motion graphic, packaging etc.
Who are the target audience and
What is the tone of voice?
With this brief I have pinpointed a problem within Bonsai growing, which is that you cant find a pack like this anywhere, and if there is a pack like this, it is not easy to find! I think this will make for an interesting packaging/ publication project.
Summer and the briefs
This summer for me has been about research into areas of design that interest me, and then has left me questioning where I want to be and what I want to be doing as a designer after I graduate. From the research I have been doing in conjunction with the briefs that I did during second year there are a few possible avenues that I want to go down. Here's what I have been up to this summer.
First of all, a few changes made for the coming term -
I have worked alot of overtime this summer in order to build up some money to buy essential tools and stuff for next term. I have also recently handed in my notice so I can prioritise 100% on the course which I regret not doing last year, I do feel because of my job I have missed out on alot of oppertunities regarding research visits and seminars from visiting designers, but I suppose this way im only in three grand debt as opposed to twenty. I can also now totally embrace this course which is great because Im leaving work with a referance which says I have been with the company for two years and done design work for them. So! Without further a do,
Summer craft fair -
Early on in the summer, me and jess went to the summer "handmade" fair in ilkley which jess wanted to get a stall at for the next one which is in december, talked to the staff there and got an entry form. This got me and jess talking about things we could do in order to make the most of this oppertunity. Jess decided she needs an identity which speaks about her as a designer on a more personal level and would be the glue that holds her design and products together for the craft fair. This is going to be one of my briefs that will need to be done fairly quickly in getting back for the new term. I nearly forgot, I might be promoting one of the stalls that was at the last fair. (Possibly.)
Ben& Ken's Shape of tommorow Zine -
I submitted an entry for the first zine, circle. I did an illustration which I attempted to vectorise, but I wasn't that happy with the results. I bought a Wacom tablet after doing alot of artist research into this area realising it is a tool that is going to be quite important to my practise in illustration to make my illustration more robust and versatile.
Live brief Visionz Logo -
I have also done a logo for a Dj During the course of this summer.
Getting to grips with my illustration skills-
Prior to buying a wacom tablet I have been inspired to draw alot more over this summer because it seems such a waste to not do it and be constantly improving and refining my illustrative skills. I understand what illustration I want to be doing and what it would be for,(Being T- shirts, promotional material for bands, events etc and other media related stuff.) irrespective if its cliche or very niche, i think i am capable of doing it alongside other things. I have submitted my first entry to a T- shirt company, in order to start showcasing my work and I have also been looking into a submission based zine called designer violence which I think I would be able to make a successful submission for. Im thinking about using these two avenues as mini briefs alongside the 10 briefs which I could complete intermittently between project briefs, these two options are both platforms which could possibly lead to other things.
Varied research -
My research lead me to a designer called Pierozagami, Who produces publications to a very high standard, which look great on his online portfolio and are about interesting subjects. At the end of second year I knew I wanted to design a publication, but I wasnt sure what about. I am interested in space and know probably more on the subject than your average joe, So i was thinking about producing a publication on the topic of space, and after talking to ollie about it we realised that a good context for this design would be a supplementary publication in young scientist magazine. This idea is why my summer practise blog is so saturated with information graphics and publication spreads, as its these areas I am likely to utilize when doing this project.
My identity and website -
Obviously in order to be in control of myself and my design I'm going to need the platforms every good designer/ illustrator and every other craftsman has, this being an identity - but within that, the website, the business cards, and whatever else would be applicable and relevant to me and my practise. I have been putting off doing any identity work for myself up to now because I didnt feel like there was enough meat on the bones of my practise to even bother considering promoting myself up to this point. However now I do feel like it would be worth it so I would like to do myself a website, business cards and all the rest of it as a brief for next term, ideally having this brief completed about half way through the year. So I can start putting work up on there.
Working around the Dissertation -
I am aware that this dissertation is going to take up a considerable amount of time, fair enough it isnt ideally what I would prefer to be doing with that time, but I'm ready for the challenge. Because of this I thought it would probbably be wise to engineer a brief that isnt too huge so I can do that as well as do the dissertation. I have a self directed brief which is solely focused on illustration and print to be doing which I will elaborate on in another post. I also want to mention here how my dissertation research is going quite well, as I keep finding sources that I can relate to my chosen subject all over the place.
A new interest -
I have become interested in growing plants over the summer and I also realised that I couldnt really find much help in my area of choice which is bonsai trees. There are care guides and little grow your own kits, but it seems like you have to go all over the place just to get all the bits you need to start from scratch. I ended up buying a developed tree even though it defeats the object of growing plants. I want to design an all in one bonsai care package of some kind. I will elaborate more on this in another post.
Acollaboration and competition brief -
I would be looking to collaborate with somebody in the coming term, after the success me and ollie had with our cartoon network brief (im not talking about winning, just how well it went and what we came out with at the end of it all) I think it would be really good to apply that level of teamship to a new collaboration. I mean, obviously what I would be bringing to a collaboration is illustrative ability so I would like to work with somebody who is more confident in other areas to this, maybe like type or idea generation. I would love to be given a totally off the wall idea to illustrate for.
Im also going to pick a competetion brief and hopfully win! (ha ha ha..)
There are a few more briefs im toying with, but they arent all as realised as this yet so ill post them up in a later post. Thanks!

My efforts for contacting
Kev Grey
www.kevgrey.com
Kev Told me that some good places to go to get my design out there would be:
Spunky.com & Teepay.com - After looking into this I found out this would be a really good thing to do to get some design out there, and is part of my summertime enterprising plans.
I also got in touch with Delta Print solutions, I have been talking to them and I need to arrange a time to go down and see what they are about as a print studio.
I did get in touch with a print and design studio called Kromagene, this was a client of my dads - but I wouldnt be able to visit them now because of the current economic climate and the effect it can have on businesses.
I emailed Mike Giant, but heard nothing back.

A review of the presentation and a summative statement
We had the presentation last thursday and I was really confident about it until it got to doing it, I flopped. But I think it was just nerves getting the better of me for whatever reason, so Im going to do a slightly longer summative statement than I would have done normally.
At the beginning of the year I knew that I was confident with print and was looking forward to learning more about processes and theory behind print to enhance my work. I produced some work using specialist print methods like gloss and emobssing and Broadened my skill set for print, This project was also when I became familiar and confident with screenprinting and set some strong foundations for later on in the year. I also did the publication for print which I really enjoyed and Think I havent done enough work similar since - Layout is definately something I will be exploring over summer in the form of publications and more type driven design work.
Into the movie season brief. I ended up rushing the finals and have decided moving image is probably not for me at this point in time, I have non of the software and It doesnt really interest me as much as other aspects of design. I found that I much prefer working with still type and image whilst working on this module.
The image module really got me pushing out alot of print work - I used alot of screenprinting and started to lay a greater consideration for design for print down, in terms of colour combinations, considerations for the amount of screens needed and the size of the screens (also in relation to a set budget and deadline). It helped me realise what is achievable at any given time when using print.
The collaborative brief got me really organised and working effectively on set specific tasks that would go towards a bigger result. Ollie also taught me alot about software and made me alot more confident with my software skills. This is really helping me to get a grasp on what it is I like to do. I applied this to the next half of this module in creating a range of products for a record label. This was the first project where I think I produced something to a high, professional standard. This project has opened a door for me, I am in contact with therapy records discussing doing some work for their artists on the label over summer.
So, at the end of second year:
A really, really, good year Full of ups and downs. I can't wait to get back and get designing - I feel Im finally ready to do so now.

So, at the end of second year:
- I understand my short comings - I need to document all my development, even if it is weak.
- I need to organise myself, my files and my stuff (e.g laptop, pens etc) So that I am ready to work without distraction and problems.
- The relationship between type and image, and how that relates to products and design is really interesting to me at the moment - this is something I want to explore over summer - I am in discussion with a photography student mate of mine on doing a publication, I also want to produce a few other publiations over summer which reflect interests of mine such as space (more specifically and intensely geeky, but Nebulas)
- I also want to design a branded Identiy for a printed textiles student who has asked me to do so, I'm not sure wether these projects should be saved for third year and just written over summer, or done over summer.
- I plan to do some enterprising over summer in the form of - Selling stock images online, and selling T- shirt designs to two websites I have been linked to from one of the contacts I made when we emailed out our portfolios.
- I have no placements yet, but personally I am not looking for one - I emailed free lance designers and ilustrators for links and networking - But I have booked a visit to delta print for a few weeks time, which should be really interesting.
A really, really, good year Full of ups and downs. I can't wait to get back and get designing - I feel Im finally ready to do so now.
